To be scheduled.

Conference

To be scheduled.

  • why we need better licensing: @balupton recounts the problems he and his projects have faced, with widespread adoption, zero funding, unpaid maintenance, and monopolised plagiarism
  • what are the barriers to better licensing: ndas around gpl licensing enforcement create lack of awareness that solutions are possible, keeping open-source exploitation the status quo
  • what is the frontier of better licensing: demo of @kemitchell’s work and what is to come
  • lightning talks and final discussion or perhaps panel on what are the challenges and needs that still need to be solved
    • plagiarism cohorts
    • seamless charging and deal striking
    • subscription vs one off payments
    • ethical regulation via licenses
    • bundle deals, setapp/cohort model

    • Bevry licensing changes [mit → @kemitchell permissive (with patent defence pool) → credit → parity → icepick]
    • Automated deal breaking vs manual deal breaking
    • All bevry software in one deal, instead of buying licenses for each and every piece
    • License adoption portfolio automation [search github for license usage rather than manual usage]
    • GitHub Sponsorship as payment? Good idea or bad idea?
    • Conference (presentation meetup) and overall discussion of discourse topics

I’m down for something regular, with no strong opinion on form it should take.

My main personal need right now is some time off. I’m burning both ends pretty close together. After that, I need to get back on track doing regular passes on IndieCC. My cadence got derailed by my injury and subsequent scramble to catch up.

You could do podcasts.

There’s gold in them hills!

In all seriousness, I did try a bit of a podcast experiment last year, with a really great guy who had all kinds of curiosity about open licensing and such. We found the energy for one initial experiment, but no more than that.

I’ve also thought about doing a kind of regular “office hours”, essentially a kind of open licensing clinic, where people who have problems and no chance of hiring a good lawyer can send questions. But I was thinking about this more as a chance to make opportunities and a platform for attorneys trying to read up on open licensing, or establish that as a new aspect of their professional practice, rather than as The Kyle Show, or Kyle and Friends. The main draw for me keeping it within a very well defined time box.

I got Zoom. Let’s do something.

Time zones?

AWST (Perth, Western Australia); however fairly flexible.

In the spirit of adding to the existing forms this could take:

  • monthly catchups (no prep)
  • kyle open office hours
  • podcast
  • monthly meetups (with presentations, q&a, and discussion afterward)

I’m leading most to the meetup idea. Where we put forward some presentations, then coalesce around a plan for integration. The recording of which then crossovers to the podcast demand.

For presentations, to throw some out to make the idea sink in a bit, would be:

As mostly whenever I try to talk to others that aren’t maintainers themselves, I get surprise, confusion, and resistance. It would be nice to have a concerted marketing effort and resources to assist with that (recruitment of other maintainers, users, companies, and lawyers). Happy to be the steward and wrangler of this.

The digital conference/meetup idea however is not mutually exclusive, we can implement as many forms of meetup as we deem fit. Just elaborating on one.

Assuming there are no Europeans, how about 90 mins around 2021-07-28T01:00:00Z for a general meetup? Not sure if 5pm or later san fran time is better

If there are Europeans, I’ll need to do either really late or really early.

I’m sorry. I’ll be traveling that day.

Perhaps one week earlier, or two weeks later, in the second week of August?

Let’s do one week earlier. So next week. Keen to get the ball rolling.

Works for me. I’ve set up an audio-only Zoom room.

Others: Send me your email if you want an invitation!

I’d be interested in joining the next one, I have a 2 hour session to sync with Japan time zones then so can’t make it this time.

Assuming that time works regularly, @boris can you suggest a date for the next one?

@kemitchell can we make the OP a Community Wiki so that it can be used as an agenda

Made it a wiki. Shout if you don’t have the right level to edit.

For anyone who’d like to join now:
